Summary
The film tells the true story of Alan Bennett’s (Alex Jennings) fractious friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd (Dame Maggie Smith), a strange homeless woman who Bennett allowed to temporarily park his Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home in the 1970s. She stayed there for fifteen years. As the story progresses, Bennett learns that Miss Shepherd is actually Margaret Fairchild (died 1989), a former talented student of pianist Alfred Cortot. She played Chopin in a traveling musical, tried to become a nun, was placed in a convent by her brother, escaped, was hit by a motorcyclist who believed he was to blame, and then lived in fear of being arrested.
