MF Ghost follows Kanata, a young English-Japanese racer who joins the official high-speed street racing series in Japan called MFG. His real goal is to find his father after his mother’s death, but as a former student of the protagonist of Initial D, his entry into the world of MFG attracts the attention of interested parties. On the surface, the existing elements should be capable of creating good drama, but MF Ghost doesn’t do it justice. Whenever the show gets a chance to spend time with its characters, things quickly get over the top. This is most notably evident in the “romance” between Kanata and Ren, the daughter of the family he’s staying with. I’ve legitimately compared their romantic interactions to scenes from The Room, and while I’ve obviously chosen an extreme example for that comparison, it still reflects the slanted, uncomfortable, and beguiling atmosphere surrounding the subplot. This emphasis on romance doesn’t do Ren any favors, as it defines a large part of her character, and she’s not alone in that. I hate to quote the Bechtel test because of its comedic origins and how it doesn’t always fit the narrative, but it’s amazing how much Kanata has taken over the minds of the female cast. It doesn’t help that age is a regular factor in the show’s relationships, as Ren is currently 17, and one of the racers is 25, and he’s seriously interested in dating her. The only saving grace for the character is that he’s oblivious to his age and has stated outright that he has no interest in dating high schoolers. Unfortunately, this was brought up in a conversation with another driver who only dates 17-year-olds.
