Summary
Based on a true incident that occurred in August 1972. A Chase Manhattan Bank branch in Gravesend, Brooklyn, New York, was targeted by Sonny, a Vietnam veteran turned bank robber, determined to steal enough money ($2,500) for his “wife” (Leon, a man; according to a TV news report, the two were married in a church by a priest who was dismissed shortly afterward, although Leon tells the police that Sal is “married with children”) to undergo sex reassignment surgery. (The real person on whom Leon is based did have the surgery.) On a hot summer afternoon, Sonny and two accomplices, Stevie and Sal, set out to rob the (fictional) First Savings Bank in Brooklyn. Stevie gets nervous and runs away. Although the bank manager and tellers agree not to interfere with the robbery, Sonny discovers there isn’t much to steal, as most of the day’s cash has already been collected. Sonny then receives an unexpected call from Captain Moretti of the New York Police Department, who informs him that the bank is surrounded by the entire city’s police force. With few options under the circumstances, a nervous Sonny negotiates with Moretti, demanding a safe escort to the airport and a plane to leave the country in exchange for the safety of the bank employees.
